In 2003 at the age of 52, local businesswoman Shari Powell learned first-hand what it takes to be a cancer survivor. Never a smoker and in relatively good health, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Her treatment involved surgery to remove the tumor and one lobe of her right lung and several chemotherapy sessions. While undergoing treatment, Shari realized that there are not a lot of organizations that help adult cancer patients cope. Months of treatment left her with the desire to reach out to others struggling through the ordeal of surviving—from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. In June 2004, with the support of her family, Powell launched Conquering Cancer. Conquering Cancer’s mission is to: - Provide support and encouragement to adults in the Atlanta, Georgia area who are undergoing treatment for cancer by providing gifts and services to brighten their day.
- Serve as a constant reminder of the fact that they ARE surviving, and help them show it to the world.
- Provide an open dialog between persons who might not otherwise realize that they have something like this in common.
A big part of Conquering Cancer’s mission is to give cancer survivors an outlet to show their pride and determination in beating their disease. To support this, the Cancer Survivor Store, available through the Conquering Cancer web site, stocks products that reflect the understanding of what it means to be a cancer survivor. Conquering Cancer is an all-volunteer organization, so proceeds from items sold through the Cancer Survivor Store, as well as the generous contributions from the community, are used to purchase gifts and services that might otherwise be overlooked by a cancer survivor's friends and family. |
