Evaluating an Application Development Platform For FileMaker Development
A new IT guy at a large company in Texas was tasked with finding a development tool for a new application. After doing some research, he went to his manager with a hot-off-the-press product from a well-known software publisher. His manager asked him 3 questions:
- How long has the product been out?
- How many customers do they have?
- What’s their ecosystem look like?
The answers were not very long, not very many, and pretty thin, respectively. There are all sorts of buzzwords flying around the world of fast application development tools these days: no-code, low-code, high productivity platform as a service, and so on. And as soon as the industry analysts anoint a new hot product space, the usual suspects pile in with new offerings to try and catch the wave.
There’s a lot to sift through, but the questions above really clarify the landscape, especially when you examine how many products have been abandoned and discontinued over the years. The organization ended up selecting FileMaker.
Why Delivery Speed is Critical
According to Gartner, 80 to 85% of IT budgets get spent on maintenance, so there’s not a lot left for expensive application development efforts. Add to that the fact that technology is changing so rapidly that it’s impossible for IT resources to stay on top of the snowballing technology stack. There’s just not enough time in the day to learn everything they need to know and do their jobs.
Being able to quickly deliver applications that are flexible, that can scale, and that can connect into legacy data infrastructure, is crucial. And it’s not just the technology that’s changing quickly. The business conditions that create the need for new applications are also changing quickly. If it takes too long to develop an application, the requirements can evolve by the time the application is delivered.
With FileMaker Development – Everything Integrates Deploys Everywhere
FileMaker is ostensibly a database product, but it can be used to develop applications that can run on Mac or Windows, in a web browser, on iOS devices, on Android devices, and has a rich set of APIs for REST, XML, PHP, ODBC, and even Tableau integration. FileMaker can easily communicate with the APIs of the constellation of microservices that can be found these days.
You also need to select a platform that won’t disappear out from under you, that has a track record, and that has a community you can turn to when you get stuck on a technical issue.
FileMaker Development Everything Integrates & Deploys Everywhere
FileMaker Development these days is not unlike cyclists riding in a peloton – the riders take turns riding into the headwinds so that other riders can have it easier.
The shared effort makes everyone go faster, and that’s true in application FileMaker Development as well. That works best when there’s a worldwide community of fellow developers to turn to for help, which is what you find on the FileMaker Community. FileMaker has been around since 1985, has millions of users, and is constantly evolving to stay current with modern application requirements.

What We Do
The Moyer Group is a technology services company that develops custom applications for workgroups, mobile, and the web. We specialize in building client-server and web-based applications with a strong database component. Typically we utilize FileMaker Pro for workgroups, and MySQL/PHP solutions for higher transaction or native web systems.
We have written a number of books on database design with FileMaker Pro as well as numerous articles, training materials and conference presentations for both the FileMaker and open source communities. Our senior members have been the recipients of a number of industry awards. The Moyer Group is a Platinum level member of the FileMaker Business Alliance.
How It All Started
From 1991 through 1994, Chris Moyer, the founder of The Moyer Group, was working as a sales engineer for Claris Corporation (now FileMaker, Inc.), a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple Computer (now Apple). After leaving Claris, Chris founded Chris Moyer Consulting and released his first book, Special Edition Using FileMaker 3 in 1995. He was one of three trainers hired by Claris to roll out FileMaker 3 to the developer community worldwide.
Since then, Chris has co authored two additional books on FileMaker, was the technical editor of FileMaker Advisor Magazine while also coauthoring the Ask Advisor problem solving column, and has also given several presentations on a variety of topics at several FileMaker conferences and user groups.

FileMaker Development Manufacturing
It’s no secret that one of the biggest problems facing U.S. manufacturing is finding enough workers.
- Labor-intensive processes are only getting harder to staff.
- Lights out manufacturing is one option, but the cost is astronomical.
A middle way can be leveraging technology to do more with the workforce you have. This is the premise behind collaborative robots, and there are other ways to take advantage of technology to optimize tasks like production scheduling.
This is where The Moyer Group comes in.
An Experienced Partner
Founded in 1995, the Moyer Group has long experience in working with manufacturers to take advantage of technology so they can achieve more with fewer workers. With barcoding, automated workflows and mobile devices, our applications can take the tedium of administrative paperwork off your workers’ hands, freeing them up for higher value tasks.
We build flexible applications that can change and adapt as business conditions change around you. Rather than locking yourself in with rigid, ‘one size fits all’ applications, consider a custom application that works the way that you work, can be easily changed when you need to change.
- Can run on-premises or in the cloud
- Can be modified without redeploying
- Modifications can be brought online quickly
With over 20 years in the industry, we can pinpoint areas for optimization, and use our experiences and analytics to determine optimal means for production and business operations.
The Moyer Group is an authorized FileMaker reseller. Let us help you save money with discounted pricing on new licenses, annual renewals, or maintenance renewals.
